Beef production has become a series of highly specialized enterprises, consistent with technological and temporal developments throughout agriculture. Technological developments in forage and grain production, feed processing, feedlots, and transportation systems have helped physically transform the beef production industry and altered the flow patterns of beef cattle and carcass beef throughout the United States. A weanling calf produced in Virginia may be hauled to southern Georgia or Louisiana to be wintered on pasture, shipped to a Colorado feedlot for finishing, slaughtered in Colorado and the carcass shipped to Pennsylvania to a retail chain which services stores in Virginia.

Summary
Small carbon grains are assumed to be the carrier of the prominent interstellar ultra violet absorption at 217 nm. To investigate this hypothesis, we produced small carbon particles by evaporating graphite in an inert quenching gas atmosphere, collected the grains on substrates, and measured their optical spectra. In the course of this work – which in the decisive final phase was carried out with the help of K. Fostiropoulos and L. D. Lamb – we showed that the smoke samples contained substantial quantities of C60. The fullerene C60 (with small admixtures of C70) was successfully separated from the sooty particles and, for the first time, characterized as a solid. We suggested the name ‘fullerite’ for this new form of crystalline carbon.
Introduction
The production of laboratory analogues of interstellar grains was the initial aim of our research. In the autumn of 1982 while one of us (D.R.H.) was a Humboldt Fellow at the Max Planck Institute of Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg we decided to study the optical spectra of carbon grains. We felt challenged by the intense, strong interstellar ultra violet (uv) absorption at 217 nm which it had been proposed was due to graphitic grains (see, for example, Stecher 1969). The arguments in favour of such carriers are based primarily on calculations of the absorption of small, almost spherical, particles which exhibit the dielectric functions of graphite (for more recent literature see, for example, Draine 1988). There had already been very early experimental attempts to produce graphitic smoke particles by almost the same technique that we later applied to C60 production (see, for example, Day & Huffman 1973).

The high-resolution He I photoelectron spectrum of C60 in the gas phase is reported and compared with the photoelectron spectrum of C60as a thin film prepared by vapor deposition (one to three monolayers) on gold. The spectra show low valence ionization bands that are very sharp and well-separated for a molecule of this size, consistent with the highly symmetric truncated icosahedral structure and theoretical calculations. The total band widths of the valence ionizations from the thin film samples are comparable to those from the gas phase species, showing that the electronic interactions between the molecules and with the surface do not significantly influence these measurements of the molecular electronic structure. The gas phase photoelectron spectra also show vibrational fine structure in the first and second ionization bands with spacings that are consistent with the two totally symmetric vibrational modes of C60. The first vertical ionization energy relative to the vacuum level is determined to be 7.61 ± 0.02 eV from these gas phase measurements.

In May of 1990, crystals of a new form of carbon were observed crystallizing from a solution of the newly-produced macroscopic quantities of fullerene molecules. This discovery followed many years of work we had done in producing and measuring the optical properties of small particles of graphitic carbon, a work which was aimed, in part, at a better understanding of the various spectral features of interstellar material. Among three distinctly different types of carbon particulates, distinguished by their differing ultraviolet and Raman spectra, was one that later proved to contain macroscopic quantities of C60 and C70. Evidence for fullerenes came from mass spectra, infrared spectra, and X-ray and electron diffraction. More, recent experiments with our collaborators have included scanning tunneling microscopy and gas phase emission spectroscopy in the infrared. At the moment, there is no obvious connection with interstellar spectral features.

Comparisons between measured extinction on small particle systems and the same quantity derived from scattering calculations using bulk optical constants often show substantial disagreements. Based on such comparisons, certain pitfalls which have been recognized in such a process, as it applies to the modelling of interstellar dust properties, are pointed out. Illustrations are taken from laboratory work on SiC, graphitic carbon, and olivine-type silicates.

Optical constants of olivine – (Mg, Fe)2SiO4 and magnetite – Fe3O4 are presented for the wavelength range from near infrared to far ultraviolet. A feature occurs in the optical constants of olivine at about 1460 Å, but no structure that could give rise to a 2200 Å interstellar feature is found. The most peculiar characteristic of the magnetite results is the large change of optical properties with temperature in the infrared.
